Jeff Purswell
How do we move from knowing about humble orthodoxy to living it? Jeff Purswell’s message gives the answer: Orthodoxy becomes functional in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. Or to put it another way, humble orthodoxy is dependent orthodoxy.
Preaching from John 14:16–26, Jeff outlines six marks of the Spirit’s empowering work in our lives:- The Spirit’s empowering work reveals Christ’s presence and illuminates his work. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to Jesus. He moves us to love and trust and pray to and worship and follow him.
- The Spirit’s empowering work embraces all of life. Breath, air, and brain waves are to physical life what the Spirit is to spiritual life. When we deny our sinful tendencies, when we walk through a trial with hope and faith, when we selflessly serve in obscurity, we’re displaying the Spirit’s work.
- The Spirit’s empowering work is ongoing and continuous. Scripture emphasizes, not isolated experiences, but the continuous work of the Spirit. Think of it this way: the Holy Spirit doesn’t work WMD-style, dropping explosions of “awesome experience” and then moving on. Instead, the Spirit moves door-to-door through our hearts, taking control of each area of our lives.
- The Spirit’s empowering work aims at our personal sanctification, mutual edification, and evangelistic witness. If you want more of the Holy Spirit in your life, pursue these things. The nature of the Spirit’s work is to draw us away from self-concern to an outward focus.
- The Spirit’s empowering work should include a discernibly dynamic dimension. When believers encounter the Spirit, things happen. We see this throughout the book of Acts. The first Christians proclaimed the gospel through the Spirit’s power, and it was this that turned the world upside down.
- The Spirit’s empowering work meets us as we passionately seek God and dependently serve God. We don’t earn God’s power, but we can lean forward and expect the Spirit’s power. We can passionately seek. We can dependently serve.
Finally, Jeff outlines three ways to respond: be desperate, be hungry, and be dependent. And remember, it’s only because of the cross that we can respond at all.
