The Story: Understanding the Story Line of the Bible MP3 DOWNLOAD

Item # A2240-02-51

Mark Dever

This sweeping message spans the entire Bible: Genesis to Revelation in 60 minutes.

Beginning with creation, Mark Dever summarizes the Old Testament in two words: promises made. He then paints a picture of the Old Testament in three broad strokes:
  1. A particular history. God spoke to us, not through an encyclopedia of divine attributes, but through a grand story—a story made up of propositions. Both propositions and narratives are necessary gifts from God.
  2. A passion for holiness. Two themes emerge from this epic story: God’s passion for his own holiness and humanity’s continual failures of holiness.
  3. A promise of hope. The answer to humanity’s failure is not in ourselves, our history, or the sacrificial system described in the Old Testament. Humanity’s only hope for nearness to God lies in a sinless sacrifice.
Dever then moves to the New Testament, summarizing it in the phrase promises kept. He explains this part of Scripture using three general categories:
  1. Christ is the one central figure in the story of history. We love the Bible because it reveals Christ.
  2. God’s covenant people reflect God’s image. Jesus came to redeem a group of people and to establish a new covenant.
  3. All creation exists to glorify God. The climax of Scripture is the promise that God’s people will see his face (Revelation 22:4).
This was the second main-session message given at Na 06.
