There’s a phrase we used a lot at New Attitude 2006: humble orthodoxy. But what does it mean?
In this message from 2 Timothy 2:14–26, delivered during the conference’s opening session, Joshua Harris talks about our need for both truth and humility.- We must handle truth faithfully. It’s not enough to acknowledge that Scripture is true. We must treat it with deep respect. Do you handle truth like Play-Doh, or like a precious diamond?
- We must live the truth personally. Truth inspires personal holiness. Let us not slip into pride or fall into the temptation to forsake the church out of mere independence. Joshua pleads for multi-generational churches, where the older generation can faithfully teach the younger.
- We must represent the truth humbly. The truth is not a stick for lashing others—if it is, our attitude contradicts what we say we believe. An accurate understanding of God and his grace—orthodoxy—humbles the soul.
We need truth and we need humility. Truth matters. But humility displays that truth in our lives.
