How much easier it is to study doctrine than to study one’s heart and motives! Continually immersed in matters of preaching, studying, or counseling the Word, pastors can easily assume they are obeying the Word. But knowledge of Scripture, however extensive, is insufficient. The inner war against sin never ends, and absent the diligent application of Scripture, we not only fail to grow stronger: we weaken.
In this exhortational message based on 1 Timothy 4:16, C.J. Mahaney reminds pastors of the central importance of continually pursuing sanctification and accountability, and offers a wealth of practical guidance toward that end.
There is a glorious promise given to pastors in this one verse, a promise not only for themselves but for the congregation. It is a reminder that the power for change comes entirely from God. In effect, Paul tells Timothy, “Watch your life, watch your doctrine, then watch the Savior work.”
