Preaching from the Old Testament MP3 DOWNLOAD
Item # A2235-03-51
Ligon Duncan
The Christian preacher is to preach Christ. Does that mean he preaches only, or even primarily, from the New Testament?
No, says Ligon Duncan. As we read in 2 Timothy 3:14–17, “all Scripture is breathed out by God,” and all of it is “able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” In eight points (listed below), Ligon Duncan teaches pastors how to preach from the Old Testament and recommends numerous pastoral helps for that task. Along the way this master preacher, pausing to give examples from various books of the Old Testament, provides a model of what he is teaching.- Preach the Old Testament as a Christian book. The way of salvation by faith alone, in Christ alone, is illuminated in the Old Testament as well as in the New.
- Preach the Old Testament expositionally. We believe not only in sola Scriptura (the sufficiency of Scripture for Christian life and belief), but also in tota Scriptura (the sufficiency of the whole of Scripture as our final authority).
- Preach Christ from the Old Testament, using the many New Testament passages that comment on the Old Testament and illumine Christ in it.
- Preach the one plan of redemptive history from the Old Testament. There is one strand of history that begins in the Old Testament and is consummated in the New.
- Preach grace from the Old Testament. Grace is revealed in the Old Testament as well as in the New.
- Preach the character of God from the Old Testament, for his character is beautifully explained and illustrated there.
- Preach experientially from the Old Testament. The Old Testament, and particularly the Psalms, provide the language of Christian experience—the language Christians can use to avoid the twin dangers of shallowness and bitterness as we encounter life’s challenges.
- Preach the Christian life from the Old Testament. The Old Testament writings are given to us in part as an example for our lives.
